CUTTING BACK TO BASICS

19/04/2015
BACK TO BASICS

Despite constantly challenging myself to break out of my – very confined i.e all black ehhrthing – comfort zone, sometimes when you’re stuck in a rut, limited on time (why is it that no matter how early you start getting ready, you always underestimate how long it will take?) and need to get out of the house quicker than you can say “Get a move on bitch“… it’s easiest to just go back to basics. Hence today’s blog post.

Life has got a little bit crazy lately and I seem to constantly be in a rush, with no time to plan anything – which the inner control freak in me is having a field day about – so quick, easy, basic outfits that just work, no matter where I’m heading, no matter what the current trend is, are what I am currently relying on.

Said basics… with a side of squinting (sexy…), creased clothing (chic…) and greenery (yep, such thing does exist in South East London…)

london blogger
Blazer: H&M aka the queen/king of basics! (old, but identical here)
V-neck Tee: Forever 21 (old, similar here)
Jeans that are more expensive than I’m used to – i.e Primark – but are absolutely gorgeous: Levi via ASOS
Chloe-esque (i.e massive knock off) boots: Random shop in Bluewater that I have no idea what it’s called. #ShitBloggerSays
That watch: Daniel Wellington

When it comes to basics/classic wardrobe staples, you can’t go wrong with a blazer. They’re smart, chic, can be dressed up or down… they’re basically very versatile which means it’s completely illegal not to own one in every colour and material. Today’s blazer comes courtesy of H&M and is a lovely, soft cotton black blazer. And yes, I do own this in Navy and burgundy… #SorryNotSorry

These “Chloe-esque” boots were bought at least 2 years ago – when the whole studded ankle boot faze went cray* – and I actually totally forgot all about that these. But when I found them under a heap of shoes (literally a heap of at least 70 shoes [insert “can’t look” emoji here]) I knew I had to bring them out again for Spring. They’re the perfect “comfortable but smart” shoe that can be paired with jeans, tea dresses, shorts… basically everything, meaning they’re perfect all year round.
*Please feel free to punch me in the face for using the word “cray” in a post. I hate myself as much as Kanye hates anyone that isn’t him, right now.
Dogeared Karma necklace
Last but not least for my “go-to basics”/favourites/wardrobe staples/I’ve been working far too long today and in the process have lost my mind (… and the ability to describe what this post is even about) is a new jewellery purchase of mine from Dogeared. I have been a huge fan of Dogeared for a very long time, however it’s pretty impossible to get in the UK without paying extortionate shipping charges. Step in my saviour – yep, saviour, because I’ve totally got my priorities in check 😉 – in the form of ASOS. They stock a selection of Dogeared and luckily my Silver Karma necklace which I’d been lusting over for a long time was a part of the selection. It’s very delicate and dainty and let’s face it… I am all about those Karma vibes!
short hair
blogger hair cut
On the subject of cutting back to basics, I got my hair cut. Short. I’m practically bald. OK, OK, I am nowhere near bald but for a girl that’s always had arse length hair, it feels very short to me. Now, I never actually asked for it this short – despite having perved on stalked Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Sincerely Jule’s shorter hair for a long time – and I would be an absolute liar if I said that I didn’t freak out a little at first. But having washed and restyled myself, I now completely love it and am so pleased I went shorter. It just feels… fresher. I feel a little more “put together” now rather than Hagrid-esque. Plus, it’s nice to have less hair for those summer months, because ain’t nobody got time for a sweaty, sticky back and neck.

I have never sounded sexier right now, have I? [Insert “cry laughing” emoji here]
For the final note on basics – you are so near the end ladies, I promise! – I quite often revert “back to basics” when it comes to my makeup, and I absolutely love rediscovering old favourites (because that totally means you can now go and spend the money that would’ve been spent on makeup in Primark, right?).Revlon Strawberry shortcake
Lately I have been having a real moment with natural, sheeny eye shadow’s with a good side dose of feline flick. Plus peachy, glowy cheeks and a nude pink lip… and there you have a cliche, comfort zone “Elle face”.
Revlon Lip butter in Strawberry shortcake  – For me, this is like Mac Angel and Creme cup’s glossier more nourishing sister. A perfect, brightening nude pink that I love for an every day look.
Hourglass Dim Infusion
Hourglass Ambient lighting blush in Dim Infusion – I mentioned in my worth the hype video’s that I didn’t think the Ambient lighting powders were worth the hype. Luckily for me – and my purse – the blushes are an absolute dream. Dim Infusion is a very light, sheeny, glowy peach that gives you that “lit from within” glow. I am all about that bass glow.
mac all that glitters
Mac All That Glitters – A shadow I have mentioned numerous times before. A gorgeous champagne/golden/shimmery peach (description isn’t my strong point OK?) that is the most stunning, natural everyday colour.
spring makeup
So that brings my long, rambly – synonymously Elle – basics/wardrobe classics/makeup faves/”Oh sh*t my hair’s short” ramble to an end. (If you’ve even got this far, you go Glen Coco girlfriend!).  It’s actually been a really great week for me, lots of exciting things are in the works but I also (finally) managed to take some time out to be with family and I have cry laughed like I haven’t done in a very long time.
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I would love to know what your “go-to basics”/wardrobe staples are? Which outfit do you always go back to when you’re in a rush and need to get ready asap? Also, what are your makeup holy grails? I would love to hear your thoughts. 🙂
As always, thank you so much for reading. I hope you enjoyed this post!
xx
