HOW TO NAIL A BOLD LIP
18/11/2016
Up until pretty recently, for the vast majority of my days, my daily lipstick rotation consisted of nude pinks, peachy pinks, beige nudes and back to peachy pinks again. Maybe it’s because I have lips to rival Jay Z, or maybe it’s because I’d rather blend in than stand out with whopping huge red lips, but over the last few months I’ve kinda had a bit of a sod it moment. I’ve kinda lost all caring thoughts about if I look like Crusty the clown or if people see my lips before they see me and just rocked – well, tried to – bold lips so much more, and you know, I have become obsessed with them.
Bold lips instantly make you feel more put together, they instantly make you feel sassier and like you’ve made more of an effort, but bold lips aren’t easy to rock and they are definitely not effortless, so I thought I’d put together a little post of my top tips for rocking a bold lip, and I am so excited to put this together because although there are some practical things that I’m sure you might do already, I have a top tip that has sorta, kinda most definitely changed the game for me.
Said game changing tip? The fact that despite certain lip colours suiting certain skin tones/hair colours etc. much better; with bright, sparkly white teeth, there is absolutely no reason why you can’t rock any colour. Seriously, we’ve all tried on the lilac pink or the too orange red that makes your teeth look a little too yellow to handle… but today I have the most insanely amazing – and ridiculously pretty – product that will make you be able to wear any lip colour with confidence.
Whiter teeth gives you the confidence to rock any colour
So let’s talk about the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Rose gold shall we because I know you’ve spied the rose gold details and I know you’re using all the heart eye’d emojis in your head too. This is the latest edition to the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean range and I know that I’m not the only one appreciating those babe’in blogger friendly rose tones, amiright? But despite it being so pretty that I almost leave it lying around as part of my home decor – can we just take a moment for the personalised glass charger with the rose gold port?!?! – that is definitely not the best part about this brush. It actually has a whopping 5 different settings to choose from (White to remove surface stains, Clean to remove plaque, Polish to brighten teeth, Gum to massage gums and Sensitive which is your guy if you have sensitive teeth and gums) Using a combo of these settings or picking your personal fave genuinely makes for the cleanest, smoothest, most thorough teeth clean that I’ve ever experienced. You know when you go to the dentist and walk out with your teeth feeling sassier than Beyonce? This is how they feel every darn time I use this brush and that is something that I can definitely get on board with.
Clinically proven to improve gum health in 2 weeks, whiten in 1 week – I know, pretty amazing huh? – and removes up to 7 times more plaque than a normal toothbrush (yes I know you feel totally gross talking about plaque but soz gal pals, it just needed to be said), it’s the most effective brush you’ll ever use and why you kinda need to whack it on your Christmas list right now. It’s priced at £270 but is oh so worth every penny!
So as I mentioned, the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Rose gold is clinically proven to whiten teeth in a week and after using this for over 2 weeks now I can officially tell you that this is no lie. I have played around with teeth whiteners in the past – strongly recommend not doing this fyi – and I can honestly say that nothing has made my teeth look whiter and brighter than this, and this – because I know it feels like we’ve veered away from the bold lipstick thang a bit – is exactly why it’s my top tip for nailing a bold lip because for me, whiter teeth give me more confidence to wear any colour and therefore the little babe that is the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean rose gold means I have the confidence to wear any colour. *brb whilst I go to fetch out the black lipstick and then realise that despite having white teeth I am just not cool enough to pull it off*.
Scrub, moisturise, line and fill
Ok, so now our teeth are putting Simon Cowell’s to shame, it’s time to move on to prepping the lips and getting the perfect finish. You see, the thing with sassy bold lips is that they also accentuate every dry patch – sexy – so keeping your lips in good condition is absolutely essential. I always start by scrubbing my lips and for this I go back to basics and combine some honey and sugar and scrub, dub, dub away. Ridiculously easy, super affordable and it tastes amazing too (probs best not to eat as much of it as I do but you know, the options there). Once my lips are scrubbed and buffed, it’s time to moisturise and right now my favourites are the Burt’s bees lip balms but you also know that the Elizabeth Arden 8hr cream is equally a mega babe for keeping your lips beautifully nourished. I do end by just blotting the lips so that the products don’t slip and slide too much but definitely keep some moisture in there so your lips stay hydrated for the rest of the day.
Once your lips are prepped, it’s time to line. Now as a girl with larger lips, the only reason I line my lips is to avoid the colour bleeding and to make the colour look as neat as possible and definitely not to overline and make them look any bigger. Don’t get me wrong, if that’s your kinda thing then you fill your boots gal pal but for me… that ain’t gonna work. Urban Decay lip liners are second to none and have the best range of colours whilst Rimmel’s exaggerate lip liners are an incredible budget option.
Once you’re lined, you’re ready to go with your colour. I know a lot of girls like to use a lip brush for this but I’m lazy I prefer to just go straight from the bullet to create an even and full colour. Of course, everybody has their own personal favourites in terms of colour but for me, I genuinely have embraced the “anything goes” attitude since discovering the Philips babe because life is too short for boring lip colours and when you’re teeth are sparkly and white, why not show them off.
So that brings my bold lip/”hey I’ve got the prettiest most babe’in toothbrush” post to an end. I would love to know if you have any tips for nailing a bold lip? Have you tried the Philips Diamondclean range before? I always love hearing your thoughts 🙂
As always, thanks so much for reading!
